Mickey C. Hicks "WO6T" Scholarship Fund

The Kern County Central Valley Amateur Radio Club memorial scholarship fund, is named after our good friend Mickey C. Hicks"WO6T"(SK). Mickey was a long time member and supporter of our club, he was everybody's friend and was always willing to extend his help to others.

Mickey C. Hicks "WO6T"

Mickey Hicks"WO6T" became a silent key on August 9, 2009. Mickey was very well known throughout the amateur community globally. Anyone that had a QSO with Mickey knew he was a gentleman to say the least, and an excellent ham operator. He had a passion for radio and making new friends through the hobby he enjoyed so much. He was a long time member of the A-1 Operators club, American Radio Relay League, Northern California DX Foundation, Central Valley DX Club, and the Kern County Central Valley Amateur Radio Club.

Aside from being an avid DXer, contester, and rag chewer, Mickey may have been better known for his role each year as Santa Clause on the air"W6S" special event station, he called it "Santa's Work Shop in Bakersfield California". It was during December 13-24 each year for 38 years that Mickey talked to hams, and children of hams during Christmas time. Often he would ask the children what they wanted for Christmas, and if they had been good or not this year. He even had a way to get the shy kids talking to him by asking them a couple simple questions, usually what their favorite color was or if they had any pets.
