WHAT IS AMATEUR RADIO?

Amateur radio is a non-commercial radio communication service on the radio frequencies assigned to the Amateur Radio Service by the Federal Communications Commission (the FCC) in the United States and the International Telecommunications Union worldwide.
There are over 700,000 licensed radio operators in the US and nearly 3 million worldwide. (ARRL)

 

WHO CAN BECOME A HAM?
Anyone of any age who is not a representative of a foreign government can be an amateur radio operator in the US.
Before your can get on the air, you'll need to be licensed and know the rules to operate legally.
In the US there are three license classes that are available - Technician, General, and Amateur Extra.

EXAM DATES

Jan 10th, 2025 --- March 14th, 2025 --- May 9th, 2025

July 11th, 2025 --- Sept 12th, 2025 --- Nov 14th, 2025

The County will be renovating the building we normally use for our VE testing.
Our January 10th test session has been cancelled. Testing will resume March 14th.

 


 

 

ARE YOU READY TO GET YOUR LICENSE?

 

Would you like to take the exam to obtain your amateur radio license?
Do you want to upgrade your existing license?

 

Amateur radio license exams are conducted by a team of Volunteer Examiners six times a year at the Veterans Hall, 2101 Ridge Road (across from Heritage Park).

Testing begins at 6:30 PM. If you are planning on taking one or more exams; please contact us in advance, so all of the materials are ready for you.

 

WHAT TO BRING-

  • A pen and pencil.
  • A government issued ID that shows a photo of the applicant. If you are a student without a photo ID, then two pieces of other ID are required, such as a student ID card or library card.
  • Your original amateur radio license if you have one.
  • A calculator if needed, with the memory cleared.
  • Your FCC-issued FRN number (Click here to obtain your FRN).


EXAM FEES-

  • You will be required to pay the standard $15 VE exam fee (cash only) before taking any of the exams.If you pass your Technician exam, you are eligible to take your General exam for free at the current session. If you pass your General exam, you are eligible to take your Extra exam for free at the current session.
  • In the unlikely event that you fail your Technician exam, you are required to pay an additional $15 fee if you would like to retake the exam at the current session.

Note: After passing your Technician exam, you are required to submit an application directly to the FCC to apply for your new license.
The application fee is $35 and is paid directly to the FCC.
